California is currently in one of the worst droughts in history, which is why it is so important to make sure that you do all you can to help reduce the amount of water you use each day. Keep these tips in mind to help do your part in conserving water through the drought.

  • Fix any leaks that you have in your home, including faucets and plumbing joints to help save up to 20 gallons of water each day, per leak.
  • Replace your old, outdated showerhead with a new, water efficient one. Try to cut your showers down to 5 minutes to save up to 12.5 gallons of water each day.
  • Turn off the faucet when you brush your teeth or shave to save up to 10 gallons a day. When you are shaving, fill the sink basin with a small amount of water to wash off the razor instead of using running water.
  • Use a broom to clean driveways, patios, and sidewalks instead of hosing them down to save up to 18 gallons of water each minute.
  • Install a high-efficiency washing machine to save up to 16 gallons of water for each load. Many counties also offer rebated for installing a new, high-efficiency washer.
  • Soak your dirty pots and pans instead of scrubbing them under running water. You can also boil water in the dirty pot or pan to loosen any built up grease.
  • Replace all the toilets in your home with a high-efficiency model to help save up to 5 gallons of water with each flush.
  • Get a free water inspection from the water agency. They will be able to tell you about any leaks in your home.
